[That's some next-level bad luck at the very start of the operation. It's not hard to imagine whichever Moff was in that sector having connections to various criminal syndicates. That was normal, she'd even say. But what was unusual was them being overt about their support in this sort of way.]

Knowing you, I'm almost afraid to know what that other way you found was.

[ Pretty much par for the course, in Han's experience. The Empire cares when there's something they don't want to lose, or when they need to keep something away from someone else. The rule of law has always just been a convenient excuse. As long as there was an advantage they turned a blind eye to the syndicates. Always. It meant the syndicates did the dirty work for them. ]

Well... The thing about Kessel is, you can't chart a direct course there. They call the surrounding area the Maelstrom-- it's a mess of black holes, half-formed nebulae. Debris fields, asteroids... And a massive gravity well in the center.

We did that.

You did that.

[She repeats it, flatly. She's both a little surprised and in no way surprised. It's 100% a Han thing to do to fly into that mess, but it's borderline insanity to know you're flying into that many hazards, do it anyway, and somehow survive.]

Do Navicomputers even work with that much interference?

[She shakes her head in disbelief.]

Promise me you don't plan on doing anything like that any time soon.

[Preferably ever again, but she'll allow for unforeseen circumstances. She prefers Han very much alive and not at risk from black holes and space debris and gravity wells.]

I don't think any other ship could've,

[ he says. it's not the usual bragging tone he takes on when he talks about the Falcon, though his pride in his ship is as evident as ever. But there was a cost for that. ]

Plus we still had half a squadron of TIE fighters on us. And the things living out there...

I don't think I'm gonna have to defend the record any time soon.

[ .....yes, he would consider defending the record. Even if it's clearly the world's worst idea. ]

[She gives him A Look at his joke of defending his Kessel Run record. She knows he's probably, maybe, hopefully just kidding about that, but she feels like she has to make a point anyway.]

You're sure there were things living out there?

[Because rather than arguing about how stupid it would be to try to survive the run again, this is just as important.]

Oh, yeah,

[ he says, eyes widening a little. That thing that chased them into the Maw-- he's not going to forget it any time soon. ]

Giant deep-space things. Almost ate us.

[There are parts of space Leia is so glad she has no need or desire to ever visit. This maelstrom is 100% one of those places she does not want to see.

But with that, she looks over Han a bit suspiciously.]

Is nearly being eaten by deep space creatures a regular occurrence for you, and you just never told me?

[Han was the pilot who chose that particular asteroid, after all.]

No!

[ well, maybe. ]

Just... sometimes. It happens. It's not like I went looking for that.

We managed to trick it-- lure it in range of the gravity well.

I don't think I know anyone else that's had that happen to them even once.

[Let alone twice.

She feels bad for whatever poor monster they ran into in the maelstrom, because it really was just living its own space creature life and probably not acting out of malice. But if it was going to come down to Han vs space monster, she'd pick this way every time.]

You know, you pick the wrong part to boast about.

[ Han doesn't feel bad about it, not really. Things that are trying to eat him generally don't want to be reasoned with. He's confident he can talk his way out of most trouble, but... Well. Sometimes it's not gonna listen. ]

What do you mean? It was eight parsecs shorter than the best runs before.

[Leia bites back a smile, clearly a little amused by that still being his response, whether it's genuine or just an attempt to get a reaction out of her. She shakes her head, continuing--]

You don't think out-running deep space creatures and gravity wells might make for extra suspense?

[well really she means the helping other people out part, but that's something she knows he wouldn't include in any retelling.]

No one would care if we almost got eaten in twenty-two parsecs, [ he says, mock-haughtily. ]

[And she rolls her eyes, not actually really annoyed in the slightest.]

You want me to believe you wouldn't still brag about escaping a deep-space creature with cargo holds full of raw coaxium and still making the trip in twenty-two parsecs?

Well, part of it, probably.

[ the coaxium theft is kind of hard to brag about safely.

Possibly he has drunkenly bragged about the thing trying to eat them in other circumstances.

But Leia, really, twelve parsecs. ]

Now you see why I went after the Falcon.

If I'm honest, it's hard to picture the Falcon as anyone else's ship.

[Which is to say, yes she gets it. After all that especially, she can easily understand why he wanted to keep it.]

I wonder if she would recognize it.

Maybe.

[ Hard to say. The ship wasn't exactly at her prettiest that day. Though... well, it's not like she hasn't been scuffed and scrubbed and blasted and patched a thousand times since then, so maybe the difference is not that great after all.

Lando never lets him forget about it. ]

You know she tried to get me to join, [ he says. He doesn't really want to get into it, but it's the sort of thing that might get out if Enfys is around, better that he be up front.

Han Solo, potential founding member of the Rebellion. No big deal. ]

[Leia could argue that the Falcon has never been the prettiest or cleanest of ships, but even with that, it's the dents and blaster marks and all the other superficial damage that made the ship easily recognizable. Especially after all the Falcon had done in the last few years, it's one of the most identifiable ships in the galaxy, she'd wager. She can't help but wonder now if Enfys knew or heard about the Falcon in connection with the Rebellion and what she thought about it.]

I knew you wanted to be a Cloud Rider, [she teases, at first, a smile tugging on her lips. But after a moment--]

What would your past self think, if he could see you now?

[not a founding member of the Rebellion, but now a General and key figure in destroying two Death Stars. Big change for someone supposedly only in it for the money.]

[ It's a question he should've anticipated-- maybe on some level he even did, volunteering the information-- but still, he finds himself unprepared.

Even at the time-- it's not like he was heartless. Obviously. Looking back there's no question giving her the coaxium was he right thing; the jailbreak on Kessel, too. No matter what trouble it caused, or how rich he could've been if he'd done something different.

But selflessness had come at a cost. Part of him had known, he thinks, how it was going to shake out when he left Qi'ra. That she wasn't going to stay. That Beckett wouldn't be reasoned with. And even if both of them had betrayed him, even if he'd known both of them were going to-- ]

Probably wouldn't be as surprised as I'd have claimed, [ he says, feeling a little uneasy. But she can't be surprised that he was already taking his scoundreling very seriously, then. ]

[She's silent for a moment, just studying him after that answer. She knows there's more he's not willing to talk about yet, just from that alone. She wants to know the rest, even if that rest doesn't come today, or even for a few years.

So instead of focusing on what hasn't been said, what she does eventually come out with is--]

I'm proud of the choices you've made.

[Even if some were probably... questionable... Based on this, and on how he's been since she's known him, she knows he's done more things that are genuinely helpful and not fully scoundrel-y.]

Do you want me to keep all of this between us?

[ He has to let his gaze drop, just for a moment. It's-- well, it does feel good, to hear that. But somehow he's not sure he can be wholeheartedly proud of himself, even knowing objectively that he did good.

No one ever made him care about this kinda thing like Leia does.

At least he can be proud of making her smile. ]

Nah. Go ahead and tell people I singlehandedly funded this entire thing, [ he says, with signature bravado. ] They'll believe it.

[That alone tells her she'll keep Han's connection to Enfys quiet unless she brings it up. She doesn't think it'll cause any problems regardless; they likely left on decently positive terms, given everything.

But in response to that usual Han bravado, she rolls her eyes, nudging him lightly with her knee.]

Oh, I'm sure. Imagine what Carlist and Mon will say when they find out.

[ That gets a wry twist of his lip. The truth is he really doesn't care who knows, on some level. The choice is worth being proud of. But... At the same time, he's not sure anyone would believe it. Han has spent a lifetime cultivating his scoundrel reputation; for anyone who doesn't know him well, he could see how it would seem unbelievable. Another brag.

And even if people believed it-- well. It's not such an unfamiliar story, is it? He should've been an officer, except he didn't exactly play well with Imperial leadership. He fought back, robbed the Empire, freed slaves, did his part to fund the Rebellion--

And then left, with no plans to return to the cause.

That's the part he figures won't go over well. He could have been there from the beginning, and he refused, and he ran like hell. It looks cowardly. It wasn't cowardice, but he knows how it looks. And however grudgingly, he respects these people; it matters, if they think badly of him. ]

Enfys can keep credit for it. She worked pretty damn hard.

She did. She still does.

[What Enfys will do if--when--they advance further and efforts are shifted more toward reestablishing a functioning government, that Leia doesn't know. Well, they'll probably always need help to prevent the Empire from returning, but she can't help but wonder what sort of role she'll make for herself as things move forward.

But she can't imagine Han would know any more than she does about that.

As for things Han might be able to answer, though--]

Are there any other stories like this you want to share?

[ Han imagines there's a reason Enfys did the sort of work she did. Things are going to change-- not immediately, but soon; Han can feel it coming and he wonders, too, what he's gonna end up doing. Most of what he's done has been avoiding the Empire one way or another; there'll always be smuggling in the galaxy, but he's got the feeling he won't want to be on the wrong side of the law, in the future.

It'd probably cause some strife in this relationship and all. ]

Nah, that's it. I mean, aside from secretly being a Jedi and the crown prince of Corellia, [ he answers breezily, rolling his eyes slightly.

He's not even trying to be cagey, he can't think of anything else quite so dramatic. A heist like that is generally pretty unique. ]

[Well as long as it's not... maliciously illegal and ends up helping people in the end, it's not like Leia can argue. At least privately. Publicly she no doubt would have to.

She shakes her head at his reply, as classic Han as it is. She was enjoying story time, but this probably was about as far as it would go today, she feels.]

You did a very good job of avoiding any royal balls, Your Highness.

[whatever nobility may have come from Corellia, Leia probably has met them at some point before. And she is also of the totally unbiased opinion that Han is far better in pretty much every way than them.]

But I'm sure Luke would love having someone else to talk about Jedi history with.
