"Uncomfortable," she says immediately, but with a sort of beaming pride that takes any sting out of the answer. She reaches for his hand to drag it down with hers, so they can sit with hands clasped over the miracle they've made together.

"At first it was-- startling. It's hard not to feel like there's something wrong when it's sudden, but. After a while-- he made me feel less alone."
