Even if it were hopeless, it's in his nature to try. That's something that Daryl never would have suspected about himself a few years back. He never asked for any help, never offered any; he got Merle out of trouble now and then but other than that it was them against the world. Now... He still doesn't ask, because he knows he doesn't have to, because protecting each other is just what life is. She's only got herself to blame, in large part, for the person he's become. All of them, but Carol and Rick in particular, for trusting him, for not letting him keep to himself.
When it comes down to it, even if he's here to square things, it's not about owing, exactly. He'd probably still have come if he had nothing to offer.
