Just the sense that Carol wants to make him happy and he doesn't always feel like he deserves to be, so she'll find any made-up excuse she can to get him to accept a good deed here and there. Although she knows if she just asked earnestly enough he'd probably accept most anything she asked of him, she'll save that for the important matters.
